Architect Essentials: Community driven design on a mission to create the best sketchbooks for architects.
Hi! I am Chris, the founder of Architect Essentials. Founded in 2020, Architect Essentials began as a search for a sketchbook that could handle the functional requirements of an architect while serving as a reminder to architects that sketching by hand is equally as important to the profession as computation skills.
The idea to create a sketchbook for architects came after remembering to give my eyes a break after staring at a computer screen for 4 hours straight In the background was my bookshelf full of old sketchbooks, a reminder of all the sketching that I used to do. Once a common tool I used to work through ideas, my use of hand sketching had diminished since leaving architecture school.
I began to consciously try to improve my drawing abilities and began looking for the perfect sketchbook. I wanted a sketchbook that could handle the various mediums architects use, one that would protect drawings from easily being damaged in a book bag, one that was large enough to work through ideas but easily transportable. As I searched, I wasn’t happy with the sketchbooks that were on the market, so the designer in me sought to create a sketchbook for architects.
The Essential Sketchbook is a culmination of all these ideas and so much more. V1 of the Essential Sketchbook was our first stab at getting a sketchbook manufactured. Many of these sketchbooks were circulated amongst the architecture community to gather feedback and further refine the Essential Sketchbook. Hundreds of architects and designers provided insight into what they looked for in a sketchbook. The culmination of all these ideas has been manifested in the V2 of the Essential Sketchbook.
